Miss. Jessi’s Favorite Video Games

RiME

Available on PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch and PC.

RiME is an adventure puzzle game. Your player washes ashore on a tropical island. As you navigate the island, you unlock the help of a fox, who acts as your guide. Although it may look as if you are solving puzzles without rhyme or reason, you are casually chipping away at the mystery surrounding your presence on the island.

This was a game that took me by surprise with its seemingly simplistic design. Don’t let the easy graphics and childlike nature of the game fool you. RiME boasts a beautiful story surrounding revelations and loss.

Stardew Valley

Available on PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, PC, IOS and Android.

Online Multiplayer Compatible (up to four separate players).

After creating your character, a brief introduction shows that you are an employee of a megacorporation. Miserable and unhappy, you finally open the letter your grandfather gave you only to find out he left you his farm in Stardew Valley as an inheritance. You board the next bus to Stardew Valley and embark on the adventure of creating a new life for yourself.

This game has it all. As you develop your farm, you control what you want to do with your time and resources. You can raise farm animals, grow crops, do a mixture of both, or focus on neither! The game offers fishing, mining and monster-slaying as other activities you can do. Fans of Minecraft may find themselves falling in love with the pixel-graphics. The game is still receiving free updates as time goes on, refreshing your experience to keep you coming back for more.

ABZU

Available on PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch and PC.

ABZU is an adventure game that takes place entirely underwater. As you navigate through various aquatic landscapes, you will uncover historical pieces of a civilization that once thrived. The game also offers collectibles to find throughout that enhance the gameplay with achievements.

ABZU is whimsical and incredibly fun to play through. You aren’t alone in the waters. Seemingly every turn you make leads to discovering another species. The game gives you a chance to ride the back of an orca or befriend sharks. Ancient beasts from long ago also await your discovery further in the waters, and it’s up to you to reach them.

Overcooked/Overcooked 2

Available on PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch and PC.

Overcooked 1 & 2 are chaotic and addictive cooking simulation games. In both games, you and your cooking partner are tasked with saving the world, be it from a giant flying spaghetti monster or the Unbread (undead bread). The true magic and fun with this game comes from the couch co-op feature, which means you have the option to play side-by-side with friends and family at home. Don’t have anyone at home to play with? No problem! Overcooked 2 supports online multiplayer gameplay.

The game is full of ridiculous cooking challenges sure to have you laughing in amazement. A time may come where you are expected to cook and serve up burgers on two trucks moving around on a highway. One thing you can always count on is the satisfaction of finally achieving three stars on that one level that might have almost broken your spirit. Am I speaking from personal experience? No! No…

Unfamiliar with digital games? Here are some extra tips.

Each major console (PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch) has its own version of an online store found on the “home” screen. You should have already created an online account or profile at no extra expense in the initial set-up but, if not, then it’s easy to create. The online accounts will allow you to access the stores. From there, you can manually search for specific game titles or browse everything else available, as well as view game trailers.

For PC gamers that run Microsoft Windows, there are a few different options out there for you to use. The most widely used software to search for and play PC games is Steam. You simply download the software client onto your computer, boot it up, create an account and you’re good to search for games!

I highly recommend that before you purchase any game through Steam, you first check the computer requirements and/or suggestions to compare with your PC’s hardware. Games bought through Steam have affordable prices that tempt you to buy. Unfortunately, the reality is that games played through a computer require a lot of power and high functioning parts.

I hope that this blog post inspires some of you to try something new. It’s easy to get lost in the current reality we are navigating, but if books and movies can transport you to a happy place, so can the right video game. If you try any of these games, we would love to see it! Please feel free to tag the library on social media and share your gaming experience.
