Staff Recommendations: Favorite Music-Related Reads

We asked our library staff to share their favorite music-related reads. Here are their answers!

May not only brings flowers but music, too — at least for Campbell County Public Library. That’s because it marks our annual Arts & Culture Series, which features a variety of music performed by local professional orchestras and bands. Kicking off May 12, all concerts take place at 7 pm on Fridays at the Carrico/Fort Thomas Branch.

Celebrate this year’s Arts & Culture Series by picking up these music-related reads, sealed with our staff’s approval.

Music-Related Reads

The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes by Suzanne Collins

“This novel is a prequel to The Hunger Games Trilogy and it follows a young Coriolanus Snow before he became the powerful President Snow that we all know to hate. In TBOSAS we meet Lucy Gray, the female tribute for the 10th Hunger Games. Lucy Gray writes many ballads throughout the novel and we even find out the origin of the song “The Hanging Tree.” Make sure to check out The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes before the movie comes out in November!”

Mozart’s Starling by Lyanda Lynn Haupt

“It is an interesting little book about a starling that Mozart kept as a pet and wrote music for. While writing the book, Haupt obtained her own starling; the narrative switches back and forth between being a brief biopic of Mozart’s bird, and Haupt’s own reflections of the controversial species.”

Solo by Kwame Alexander

“Blade, the son of washed-up rock star Rutherford Morrison, never asked to be rich or famous. I liked the relationships that Blade discovers and the realization that he can choose to be a different man than his father.”

The Carls by Hank Green

“The first in the duology is An Absolutely Remarkable Thing and the second is A Beautifully Foolish Endeavor. Hank Green uses music as a plot element throughout both books in such a creative and unexpected way, and the songs he chose are Absolutely Remarkable (pun intended!), from Queen, to Carly Rae Jepsen, to the Electric Light Orchestra, and even Britney Spears! The books also have official playlists on Spotify.”
