What’s On Your Shelf? with Julie Pergrem

Take a seat, pour some tea and settle in for What’s On Your Shelf?: a series in which library staff share books from their own reading lists.

No matter what piques your interest, take a page from our staff’s favorites. Who knows? You may find your next great read. This time, we caught up with Julie Pergrem, a patron services assistant at the Carrico/Fort Thomas Branch.

Julie Pergrem with one of her favorite memoirs, “Do You Feel Like I Do?” by Peter Frampton.

Pergrem first joined the library a little over two years ago. Fort Thomas regulars may have already chatted with her about books and movies; she loves sharing recommendations with patrons and maintaining the branch’s book sale.
“I love memoirs, nonfiction, biographies…anything behind-the-scenes,” says Pergrem. “Most of what I read this past year were memoirs.”

Pergrem recently finished what she calls a heartbreaking-but-funny memoir titled This is Going to Hurt, the story of what they call a “junior doctor” in the UK. Other recent memoirs Pergrem loved include I’m Glad My Mom Died by Jeanette McCurdy and Hello, Molly! by Molly Shannon.

Explore more of Pergrem’s picks below.

What’s a book that sends chills down your spine?
Stephen King is my favorite author in general, BUT…The Road by Cormac McCarthy. I loved it…and I never want to read it again, haha! Terrifyingly plausible, and it gave me nightmares!

What’s a book currently on your bedside table?
Several! I’m currently reading All I Ever Wanted, a memoir by Kathy Valentine, the bass player for the Go-Gos, Ghost Story by Peter Straub and You’re Never Weird on the Internet by Felicia Day.

Who’s a fictional character you’d love to have dinner with?
To be honest I’d like to have dinner with some of the (non-fictional) subjects of the memoirs I’ve read: Molly Shannon, Roger Daltrey, Peter Frampton, any of them.

What’s a book you loved as a teenager?
Where the Sidewalk Ends by Shel Silverstein. My mom gave it to me, and I still have it. Also, anything by Stephen King! I read The Shining by Stephen King when I was in the seventh grade and have tried to stay on top of reading everything he’s written since.
