What’s Your Favorite Scary Movie?
Halloween
The original Halloween movie is my favorite scary movie because it is so simple, yet terrifying through the haunting music, the atmosphere, and the unhinged, yet completely realistic villain.

My favorite Halloween movie, and one of my favorite movies in general, is John Carpenter's original Halloween. The music, the filming techniques (some of which were pioneering at the time) and the general campiness of the "final girl" genre are all enjoyable. Also, we cannot forget that it was Jamie Lee Curtis' film debut. Good stuff.

Pan’s Labyrinth
My favorite scary movie is Pan's Labyrinth. I love the way this movie mixes horror, historical events and fantasy. It has haunting and unsettling imagery that has stuck with me over the years. This film frames the fallout of the Spanish Civil War through the imaginative eyes of a little girl, the effect of which is pretty disturbing.

Midsommar
Ari Aster's 2019 Midsommar. I don't know if there is a movie quite so twisted – yet somehow so gorgeous aesthetically – at least that I can think of. The gorgeous Swedish countryside and the beautiful, hypnotic music hugely contrast with the story/subject matter, which is disturbing on so many levels.

Alien
Oh, Alien for sure. It's the first horror movie I remember actually scaring me. I was (and still am) an avid horror movie fan as a teen and I distinctly remember watching this with my sister for the first time. I almost left marks from how hard I was digging my nails into her arm. It's got it all: beautiful practical effects, an iconic female lead, suspense, a cat!
- Julie Gallaugher, outreach services assistant
Cabin in the Woods
I love spooky movies and when I need to boil it down to a favorite, Cabin in the Woods is likely my top spot. It's a fun scary movie with quite a bit extra for the horror fans out there. There are references to many other movies and tropes in the genre.
- Max Sulken, patron services assistant
It's a bit more of a horror-comedy, but I adore Cabin in the Woods. It's an on-the-nose take of horror movies that plays off of what fans/Hollywood has come to expect from them and how we/they react to those who dare break the mold. It has a killer cast and is all around hilarious with some horrific monsters.
