Sometimes reading is more fun when you have others to talk to. Registering for this program puts you on a list to pick up a free copy of this month’s club pick, New Kid by Jerry Craft, from the library.

  1. Register for this program to get your copy of the book. If you can’t pick it up at Newport, tell us your location choice using the special needs section of the registration form.
  2. Starting February 8th, pick up your book from the library.
  3. Read and enjoy the book at your own pace.
  4. Come chat about this month’s book and other books you love in the Zoom book club on March 12th at 4:00 pm.

Seventh grader Jordan Banks loves nothing more than drawing cartoons about his life. But instead of sending him to the art school of his dreams, his parents enroll him in a prestigious private school known for its academics, where Jordan is one of the few kids of color in his entire grade.

As he makes the daily trip from his Washington Heights apartment to the upscale Riverdale Academy Day School, Jordan soon finds himself torn between two worlds—and not really fitting into either one. Can Jordan learn to navigate his new school culture while keeping his neighborhood friends and staying true to himself?
