City Barbeque Food for Thought Series: A Swedish Nightingale and the Feejee Mermaid: The Life and Legacy of P.T. Barnum

Join us at the Cold Spring Branch for the next talk in the 12th Annual City BBQ Food for Thought Spring Lecture Series. Dr. Andrea Sutherland of the NKU History and Geography Department will talk about the life and legacy of P.T. Barnum.

Enter the world of entrepreneurs and showman P. T. Barnum, who transformed popular culture in the nineteenth century. His exhibits, traveling shows, and humbugs shocked and entertained people across all ages and economic classes. Come and learn about the Feejee Mermaid, Joice Heth – George Washington’s nurse, the Leviathan, and so much more.

About the Presenter:

Dr. Sutherland focuses on early United States history to 1877. She enjoys teaching courses from the early colonial period through the Civil War, and she is well-versed in the history of Kentucky and the American South. Her research interests are focused on the Early Republic period of United States history, with an emphasis on nineteenth-century Kentucky, family and community life, and slavery.
