The tutorial was created by Valerie Davis, the adult/teen programmer at our Newport Branch. If you have any questions about the tutorial, please email her at vdavis@cc-pl.org.

Supplies Needed

  • Ceramic pots
    • Four equal-sized small pots and one larger pot
  • Paint
    • White, black and a highlight color of your choice
  • Paint brushes
  • Cording
  • Pencil
  • Marker

Steps 1 – 3

See below for written instructions.

Step 1

Paint all five pots white. This may take more than one coat.

Step 2

Paint the small pots in accent colors to create your hooves.

Step 3

Use a pencil to draw on your unicorn’s face.

Step 4

See below for written instructions.

Step 4

Go over your unicorn’s eyes, nose and mouth with a black marker. Use your highlight paint color to make a mane and ears.

Step 5

See below for written instructions.

Step 5

Finish your face with a second color on the mane and touch up any spots that need to be fixed.

Steps 6 – 7

See below for written instructions.

Step 6

Guide the rope into the pot and run the rope from the top of the pot down. Bonus Tip: Tape the edge of your rope to make it easier to guide it through the hole.

Step 7

Tie a strong knot to secure your rope inside the face pot.

Step 8

See below for written instructions.

Step 8

Unwind the cord to create four different pieces of string coming out of the face pot for each hoof. Repeat the knotting process both above and inside each hoof pot. Tie the knots so that the pots hang at different heights.

Step 9

Enjoy your magical wind chimes!
