Smithsonian needs your Newport sports photos

Dave Cowens

So what if you don’t have a street in Newport named after you, like basketball Hall of Famer Dave Cowens. Your sports memories are still important. In fact, they might even belong in the Smithsonian. Really!

The Library has been awarded the Smithsonian Traveling Exhibition: Hometown Teams, which we will host April 29 – June 3, 2017, at our Newport Branch, but we need your help.

We’re seeking images or objects related to outstanding/unique Newport sports teams & individual athletes. We’re also interested in vintage home movies and film footage, which we can use to play on a continuous loop in the exhibition space for the public to see. We will consider old 8mm film that can be converted to DVD.

We’d also want to see your old mascot photos, cheerleader uniforms or bowling trophies. Anything that says Newport sports!

Each submission accepted for the exhibition will be credited to the owner and all original
images, film and other items will be returned to the loaning party at the conclusion of
the exhibition.

If you happen to be from another part of the county and played for a rival of one of the Newport teams, you might have something to offer, as well. If you have a picture of yourself blocking Cowens’ shot “back in the day,” bring it on!

We would like to receive submissions as soon as possible. If you have something you
think would be a nice addition to the exhibition, please contact Exhibit Coordinator Janet
Arno by phone at 859-781-6166, ext. 28, or email jarno@cc-pl.org.
