Frequently Asked Questions
How do I find Accelerated Reader titles for my child
Each branch keeps a notebook at the reference desk with approved Accelerated Reader titles from nearby participating schools. You can also check this website to see if your child’s school is listed: www.ReadingBookShelf.com
When can my child apply for a library card?
There is no age requirement. Children generally get their first library card when they start attending school.
Can my child check out videos?
Children, ages 16 and under, may check out unrestricted videos if the parent signs a release form on the child’s library card application. Videos marked “R” may not be checked out by anyone younger than 17.
What is your computer policy regarding children?
Children may use the library’s computers with their library card number and PIN. All computers are filtered for their protection.
Do I have to register for every program?
Most programs request registration so we can be sure to prepare enough materials. Some special programs also have a limitation on number of participants. You can indicate in the comment section if you would like your child registered for an entire series of Storytimes or Adventure Clubs. Be sure to include your contact information (phone number and email preferred) so we can notify you of any changes. Click here to register your child for Storytimes or Adventure Club.
When are your Storytimes?
Storytime schedules vary by branch. Find our complete schedule here.
What do you do in Storytime?
While we focus on books, Storytime is more than just reading.
In Baby Time (for ages 0-2) you will learn rhymes and bounces you can share with your child any time. These are designed to help with language development. Baby Time also includes some time for free play, and can be a good time to meet other parents.
In Toddler and Preschool Times we read 2 to 3 books. We also play games or sing songs and do an art activity or craft related to the books read.
What is Adventure Club?
Adventure Club is for 1st through 5th grades and Kids and Teens Choice programs are for 4th through 8th grades. We have fun and learn. Some programs like Game Day are just for fun. But other programs are educational, too. Groups like ArtReach and The Museum Center are sometimes brought in for special events. Check our schedule for information on individual programs.
Should I come to Toddler Time or Preschool Time?
Toddler Time is generally for ages 2-3 while Preschool Time is for ages 4-5. These ages are just a guideline though. For each week’s theme, we read the same books and do the same activities in both Toddler and Preschool Time. Because of toddlers’ smaller attention spans, we sometimes have to shorten the books and activities. Feel free to come to any program that’s comfortable for your child, and that fits your schedule.
Can you help my child with homework?
Librarians at our reference desk help kids find resources they need to do their assignments. We cannot do your child’s homework, but we can help him/her find the answers on their own.
If you have access to the Internet, we can help 24/7. Log on to www.askwhyky.org for help from a librarian 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. This free service is available to everyone, not just kids looking for homework help.
